Trauma

When the past continues to affect the present.

Trauma can impact how we think, feel and experience the world around us. You may know exactly what caused your trauma, or you may simply notice that certain situations leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious or unsafe. It can leave you feeling constantly alert, emotionally exhausted or disconnected from parts of yourself.

You may experience:

  • Feeling constantly on edge

  • Hypervigilance

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories

  • Feeling disconnected or numb

  • Avoiding certain situations or places

  • Strong reactions that seem difficult to understand

Trauma affects both the mind and body. Often these responses develop as a way of protecting us following difficult experiences.

As a trauma informed counsellor, I understand the importance of working at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Therapy is not about forcing you to revisit painful experiences before you are ready.

Together we can explore the impact trauma has had on your life, understand the patterns that may have developed, and find ways to help you feel more grounded, connected and in control.

I won't pretend to have all the answers, but I will work alongside you to help make sense of what you're experiencing. Sometimes that means sitting with difficult emotions. Sometimes it means gently challenging old patterns. Sometimes it means finding moments of humour in situations that feel incredibly heavy.

Sessions are available in Plymouth and online.
